The Instituto Cervantes in New York is pleased to invite you to the opening of Fabelo. Critical States, an exhibition featuring a selection of works by renowned Cuban artist Roberto Fabelo, curated by Mario José Hernández. Join us on May 9 at 7:00 PM to experience a haunting and imaginative body of work where the boundaries between reality and fantasy dissolve. Critical States builds on Fabelo’s acclaimed Vital Fragments series—now part of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba—offering new pieces on kraft paper that explore themes of resistance, chaos, and transformation through richly symbolic figures. With a technique that embraces the raw, expressive texture of kraft paper, Fabelo evokes the spirit of Goya's etchings—spontaneous, unsettling, and powerfully visual. His iconography teems with hybrid beings, shifting forms, and dreamlike scenes where beauty and unease coexist. Roberto Fabelo (Camagüey, 1950) is one of Cuba’s most celebrated contemporary artists. His work spans painting, sculpture, and illustration, and has been exhibited in leading museums and galleries worldwide. Influenced by Goya and the tradition of magical realism, Fabelo's art captivates through its technical mastery and deeply imaginative narrative power. A reception will follow. We look forward to welcoming you to the opening. The exhibition will be on view through July 6. More Info below.
