Performances starting at 2pm: Coopdanzas NY premiere of Quetzalcoatl VS The Black Snake, an environmental performance piece invoking OlmecMayanAztec tradition that is also based on the dangers of fossil fuels, created and choreographed by Cristina Cortes Lauren Hale Biniaris NY premiere of Hungry, which uses dance, gesture, and writing to explore the interconnected worlds of seeds, sustenance, hunger, and hope Eastern woodlands Indigenous presentation by Tecumseh Ceaser and Chief Reggie Herb Dancer Ceaser Food from: Forward Roots Jhal Art activitiesSummer Solstice is the longest and most light-filled day of the year, and one of our favorite days to celebrate at Socrates. Mark this midsummer phenomenon with art-making workshops and activities from The Noguchi Museum, Free Style Arts Association, and The Blue Bus Project, and join artist storyteller Satya Celeste to transform the grove of trees into a magical communal art piece. On stage starting at 6:15pm, we feature youth dancespoken word performances from 696 Build Queensbridge, and Secret Society Dance Company choreographed by Traequan Middleton representing Astoria Houses HANAC Cornerstone. Afterwards, catch Queens native and vocal artistperformer STEFAs powerful sonic layering and vocal improvisations, followed by all women drum ensemble Batala New Yorks high-energy Afro-Brazilian rhythms.
