Wallabout Film Festival 2025Sixteen years ago, a group of students from Pratt Institute, led by some of our most adventurous majors, founded a student film festival called the Wallabout Film Festival designed to showcase emerging student filmmakers. On April 23, 2009, thirty films representing thirteen countries screened in front of an audience of over 180 people in the lower east side of Manhattan. In two showcases, four awards were presented from a panel of accomplished and recognized industry practitioners. The entire film festival was coordinated and organized by students, for students. And now–after a seven year hiatus–we’re back! Wallabout is curated annually by an interdisciplinary group of Pratt students who spend the semester examining the history and theory behind film festivals and learning the practical tools required to put on a public facing festival. Under the guidance of a professor, the course culminates in the Wallabout Film festival, planned and organized by the students. Students are responsible for organizing every aspect of the festival from sending out the call for submissions to selecting the films to running the festival itself, giving them the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the world of film festivals. This year, we have undergraduate students from the Critical and Visual studies program, which originated the festival, as well as the Film department and the School of Design. This year, we received almost a thousand submissions from over ninety countries and regions. After several months of tireless work, we are thrilled to present a two-day festival at two locations. On Saturday, May 3rd, our program will include a selection of experimental films, shown at the e-flux screening room. The following day, Sunday, May 4th, our program will showcase a selection of animated films, followed by our main selection, shown in Pratt’s very own screening room. We’ll also have discussions with some of the selected filmmakers, an awards ceremony, and a reception after the screenings. Our jury is composed of Pratt professors, visual artists, filmmakers, and industry professionals, including Olivia Crough, Hanna Mattes, Lisabeth During, Pilar Newton-Katz, and Faiyaz Jafri. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the hard work of student filmmakers from around the world! For more information, please contact [hidden] Due to limited seating, RSVP does not guarantee a seat!
