"Each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor." In honor of Edgar Allan Poe's birthday, the Twisted Spine presents an annotated live reading of one of Poe's strangest and scariest short stories -- one written while he lived right here in New York City: The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar. Join Boroughs of the Dead founder, Poe fan, and nonfiction author Andrea Janes for a live reading interwoven with some behind-the-story secrets and insights that will illuminate this most terrifying of tales and show how the text intersects with real-life people and places Poe encountered while living in 1840s NYC. Whether you're a seasoned Poe fan or just beginning your descent into the maelstrom, this interactive in-person event is a fun mix of Gotham's gothic history, Poe's work, and further discussion with a post-reading Q&A. All this plus Poe trivia and prizes, and a fireside toast to celebrate his birthday! About Boroughs of the Dead: Andrea Janes is the founder of Boroughs of the Dead: Macabre NYC History Tours. She is also the co-author of A Haunted History of Invisible Women and America's Most Gothic. Since 2013, Andrea has been leading Manhattan's only dedicated Poe walking tour, Edgar Allan Poe in Greenwich Village. She has lectured extensively on Poe throughout NYC, including at the Merchant's House, Village Preservation, the Poe Cottage, and NYU, and has also led Poe-themed tours for Untapped Cities, Green-Wood Cemetery, and more.
