This exhibition honors Umlauf’s lifelong dedication to painting, teaching, and living artfully, offering viewers a final opportunity to experience a body of work marked by clarity, restraint, and profound sensitivity to the world. The opening reception will feature live music from local jazz guitarist Jacob Wise. The exhibit will be on display in the Fine Art Gallery at the Old Bakery & Emporium from January 17th to March 14th, 2026. About Madelon Umlauf: Madelon Umlauf (1942-2025) was a talented artist and respected educator born and raised in Austin, Texas. The daughter of famed sculptor Charles Umlauf and poet Angie Umlauf, Madelon grew up in a very creative environment. Madelon’s family legacy includes the beloved UMLAUF Sculpture Garden and Museum, which they gifted to The City of Austin in 1985. Madelon created her own identity as an abstract painter and taught painting for more than 30 years at Austin Community College. Her own work blended the beauty of nature with the abstract, and she always encouraged her students to test the bounds of their creativity. More Info below.
