Surround Sounds Piano_QNS (2025 NYFA/Queens Art Fund recipient) is a new instrument that plays the sounds of the borough of Queens. A Sohmer piano (manufactured in Queens) retrofitted and reprogrammed so each of its 88 keys plays a field recording while triggering a projection. The recordings were collected from a wide variety of sources throughout Queens, from the sound of a food truck in Jackson Heights, to the roar of the elevated train in Woodside, to rain on Houdini’s grave in Glendale. The results are sometimes beautiful, sometimes chaotic, much like Queens itself. Come, listen, hang, participate! After the premiere, the piano will be on view through the 23rd, 5-8PM. (Fri, Sat, & Sun. only) Surround Sounds Piano_QNS is made possible (in part) with public funds from the Queens Arts Fund, a re-grant program supported by NYC Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by New York Foundation for the Arts.
