Instituto Cervantes in New York, in collaboration with the Gabriela Mistral Foundation, the Consulate General of Chile in New York, and the North-American Chilean Chamber of Commerce, is pleased to invite you to the first session of Mamalluca: Chilean Cinema Series, to celebrate contemporary Chilean cinema and its powerful ability to imagine possible futures from the Global South. This first session will feature a screening of the film La vaca que cantó una canción hacia el futuro / The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future (2022), the debut feature by director Francisca Alegría. Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, this ecological fable blends magical realism with a profound meditation on memory, motherhood, and environmental crisis. The story begins when, following a mysterious mass fish die-off in the Cruces River, Magdalena—a woman presumed dead for years—emerges from the water. Her return unsettles her family and raises deep questions about the past, grief, and the possibility of redemption. To close the evening, guests are invited to enjoy a glass of Chilean wine. We look forward to sharing this cinematic experience with you and celebrating the richness of Chilean film and culture together. More Info below.
