Join us for the opening reception of "Relics", a solo exhibition by oil painter Wendy Chidester, and meet the artist! Wendy will be attending the open on Saturday, October 11th from 6:00–8:00 pm at Morton Contemporary Gallery. This exhibition explores the beauty and reverence of once-iconic machines—antique typewriters, movie and slide projectors, vintage cameras, and even a gumball—objects that were once part of daily life but have now been replaced, and often forgotten, in the age of smartphones and computers. Once symbols of progress and innovation, these items now live mostly in attics, museums, and memory. Rendered in oil on canvas with a contemporary realism style, Chidester’s paintings elevate each object with a quiet dignity, presenting them as relics worthy of contemplation. These works are acts of remembrance—tributes to the obsolete, the analog, and the tangible. We invite you to honor these machines, and we hope that this exhibition stirs memory, sparks conversation, and encourages a pause, if only for a moment, in the rush toward the next new thing. From the Artist:“I am drawn to the tactile, mechanical nature of these items: the rhythmic clatter of a typewriter’s keys, the low whir of a slide projector, the metallic snap of a film camera’s shutter. These sounds, so familiar to earlier generations, evoke a sensory nostalgia that transcends simple visual memory. Through painting, I seek to preserve not just the image of these objects, but their presence—the weight, the sound, and the cultural importance they once carried.” – Wendy Chidester More Info below.
