Deanna Witkowski Trio At All Angels' Church

Deanna Witkowski Trio at All Angels' Church We’re so excited to welcome pianist, composer, and scholar Deanna Witkowski back to All Angels’! Deanna served as director of music at All Angels’ in the late 1990s, and she comes back to us now for one special worship service featuring a selection of her original hymns and arrangements. Deanna will be joined by bassist Jennifer Vincent and drummer Scott Latzky. Make plans to attend this special “sacred jazz” service at 10:00 AM on Sunday, July 13. And spread the word! All are invited! Deanna will also have books and CDs available at coffee hour following the service. About Deanna Witkowski Deanna moves with remarkable ease between Brazilian, jazz, classical, and sacred music. Her seven recordings as a bandleader include Force of Nature, featuring her adventurous arrangements of works by Mary Lou Williams, From This Place, featuring a jazz Mass that she began writing while at All Angels’ (including the Sanctus!) and Makes the Heart to Sing: Jazz Hymns. Her first book, Mary Lou Williams: Music For The Soul (Liturgical Press), is the winner of the 2022 ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award and the 2022 Jazz Journalists Association Award for Biography of the Year. She has taught for Jazz at Lincoln Center, presented at the Kennedy Center, Loyola University Chicago, and Fordham University, and performed as a featured guest with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. In 2024, Deanna completed her PhD in jazz studies at the University of Pittsburgh and is currently writing her second book based on her doctoral dissertation, “Jazz in the Pews: ‘Experiments in Sunday Worship’ in the 1960s.” Her 2025 awards include the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation/Jazz Education Network research fellowship and a project grant from The Crossroads Project supported by the Henry Luce Foundation and Princeton University. Dedicated to bringing communities together through jazz, Deanna has worked as a guest music leader in more than one hundred churches across the United States. Her weekly video series, “Off the Page: Sacred Jazz,” shares practical resources for church musicians and her jazz hymn arrangements as found on her recording, Makes the Heart to Sing: Jazz Hymns, have been purchased by more than 500 churches. Newly based in Chicago, Witkowski teaches jazz piano at Elmhurst University. Experience her work at deannajazz.com. Good to Know All are welcome at this FREE worship service.
