Join the Urban Park Rangers as we explore the southern portion of Hart Island and discuss the intersection of Hart Island and LGBT history in NYC. We will present a broad overview of Hart Island history including burial practices, incarcerated labor and the role of activism in changing visitation policies. Then, we will visit individual gravesites of notable people in the queer community, as well as the 31 grave markers of those individually interred at the southern tip of the island during the AIDS epidemic.Participants are chosen by lottery. Lottery registration opens on Wednesday June 4, 2025 and ends Thursday June 5, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Please Note:-You must register each member of your party for the lottery under the same account. Anyone who was not registered will not be permitted to attend.- If you are selected for the program, you will receive a series of emails confirming your selection and must respond as soon as possible to avoid forfeiting your spot. - Hart Island is only accessible via ferry. Selected participants will be provided details regarding program arrival and other specifics.- There are no indoor facilities, restrooms or drinking fountains on Hart Island. There are portable restrooms on the island.- This tour covers historical context of Hart Island and is about two hours of walking, some parts on uneven terrain.
