Mold Habits - A Photo Exhibition By Nadya Andrianova

Who knew that being a complete mess could lead to a plethora of disturbing, yet beautiful discoveries? One fateful week, a sectioned grapefruit left sitting in a bowl in my room began to mold over. I was enthralled by the range of color and texture I saw in the rotting substance. I immediately plopped the “creature” on my parents’ scanner, inhaled the fresh spores, and captured my first of many disturbing experiments. I received varying feedback regarding this scan: disturbing, perplexing, fascinating, beautiful. I decided to keep growing my collection in both the literal and figurative sense. Over the last five years, I have scanned a wide range of organic material (old lovers’ bouquets, decaying food scraps), fascinated by that unusual method of image capture. I experimented by varying composition, motion, and subject matter, resulting in a unique outcome every time. Upon reflection, I’ve realized that this project, in a sense, is my attempt in creating self contained micro universes. The vast black background juxtaposed by the biological subjects mimics imagery of heavenly bodies floating aimlessly in space. These compositions invite the viewer to explore the discomforting feeling of not being able to classify the unknown.
