Earth Matter NY is a midscale composting facility and compost education space on Governors Island. We seek to reduce the organic waste misdirected into the garbage stream by encouraging neighbor participation and leadership in composting. Come learn about how we run our operations, explore various types of backyard composting devices, and meet our star compost workers - chickens! Our compost – or as we like to call it ‘Black Gold’ is distributed at no cost to GreenThumb community gardens throughout New York.Register on Earth Matter NY's websiteWe will meet at 10 South St inside the Governors Island Ferry building at 10:15 a.m. to take the 10:30 a.m. ferry to the island. After our tour finishes around 11:45am, you can explore the rest of the island for as long as you want or take the next ferry (at 12:00pm) back to Manhattan.Expect to walk about 2 miles total on the island.
