A Community Film Screening For Black Birders Week

Join us for a screening of How Birds Bring Us Back at Deb's Park! On Saturday, May 31st, IE will be screening our newest new short film to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Black Birders Week! Created by Black AF in STEM, Black Birders Week is a bold and unapologetic reclamation of the Black community’s role in environmental spaces—a powerful celebration of our enduring connection to the earth and a resounding call to dismantle the oppressive systems that have excluded us. For our 2025 theme, “Grounded in Community,” we are continuing a movement that centers Black joy, liberation, and collective power in the outdoors. This is a space where Black birders, scientists, and nature enthusiasts are not just participants but visionary leaders and changemakers, reshaping narratives and demanding equity in every arena. The short film spotlights three SoCal-based Black naturalists—Moses Aubrey, Roslyn Rivas, and Zee Zetino—as they share their relationship to birding while highlighting their stories of joy, mindfulness, and connection to place. This free community event will feature a binoculars 101 demo, a panel conversation celebrating local organizers helping Black folks connect outdoors, and a screening of the film. After the film, attendees can enjoy an immersive starlit soundbath in Deb's Park's beautiful nature space. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.
