Houston Cecilia Presents Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms

Houston Cecilia's upcoming performance encompasses a rich tapestry of sound, centered around the powerful juxtaposition of tradition and modernity. The centerpiece, Leonard Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms," is a vibrant choral work written and sung in Hebrew. Bernstein masterfully blends the textures of choral writing with the inherent melodic and rhythmic qualities of the Hebrew language, creating a unique and compelling plea for peace. The piece, characterized by its jazzy and contemporary feel, utilizes the voices of a chorus and boy soprano, accompanied by organ, timpani, and harp, to bring its message of hope and unity to life. Houston Cecilia will also present Eric Whitacre's "5 Hebrew Love Songs," a collection of romantic musical postcards. Dedicated to Hila Plitmann, the poet behind the beautiful text and Whitacre's wife, these songs offer a lush and intimate counterpoint to the grandeur of the "Chichester Psalms," further showcasing the breadth and beauty of Hebrew language set to music.
