Before Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Johnny Cash the foremother of Rock N Roll was Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Born in Arkansas to a family of religious singers who were sharecroppers, Tharpe would go on to be singing and guitar sensation. Despite growing up in a religious household, Tharpe would begin to merge Delta blues, New Orleans jazz, and gospel music within her sound. Known for her hit song “Hound Dog', Tharpe would change the cultural landscape of rock as a queer Black woman from the South.While the music scene began to shift in the 1950s and 60s,Tharpe would go on tour with Muddy Waters in 1964.
