who’s afraid of cartoony figuration? artist + curator talk friday, 05 april 2024 1.00 pm - 2.00 pm free admission 161 glass st.  join dallas contemporary’s adjunct curator alison m. gingeras for a conversation with a multi-generational group of artists working at the forefront of their genre who dare to mix the levity of cartoons, comics, and commercial illustration with some of the most pressing issues of our day. karolina jabłońska, sally saul, tabboo! and umar rashid will engage in conversation around the making of the exhibition, who’s afraid of cartoony figuration? featuring new bodies of work made especially for dallas contemporary. an audience q&a will follow the conversation. about alison m. gingeras alison m. gingeras is a curator and writer based in new york and warsaw.  gingeras has served as curator at the solomon r. guggenheim museum, the national museum of modern art, centre pompidou paris, and palazzo grassi, venice.  currently she serves as an adjunct curator at dallas contemporary and a guest curator at museum of contemporary art in miami in addition to working independently. known for her scholarly yet anarchic approach to art history, gingeras organized several groundbreaking exhibitions, such as “dear painter, paint me: painting the figure since late picabia” at the centre pompidou, paris (2002) and co-curated “pop life” at the tate modern (2009).  most recently, she curated “my life as a man: john currin” at dallas contemporary and “new images of man” at blum & poe in los angeles (feb-march 2020). her writing regularly appears in such periodicals as artforum, playboy, tate etc., spike, as well as in scores of books and exhibition catalogues.  the cult imprint heinzfeller nileisist recently published totally my ass and other esssays—an anthology of gingeras’ writing.  learn more about who’s afraid of cartoony figuration? here.  MUSEUM POLICIES • no food or drink, please | no se permite comida ni bebida • photography permitted, but no flash | solo fotografia sin flash • please refrain from touching the art | no tocar el arte • this is a weapon free zone | zona libre de armas with this registered admission i give permission for the dallas contemporary to use my photograph and other media such as film and quotations, on dallas contemporary promotional material and publications, for which it may be suitable.
