Art Show: The Masks They Wear

Soft Opening Brooklyn 570 Manhattan Ave, Greenpoint Brooklyn August 24th-September 24th 2019 Press Release: "The Masks They Wear” artwork by Terri Frohman, is a digital collage series that explores and reinterprets romantic courtship. In part of the series, vintage “Welcome to New York City” postcards depict men in urban streetwear wearing tribal masks with a surrealist style. Interrogating behavioral and emotional patterns of courtship and demonstrating ways in which males reveal themselves over time, the artist deconstructs the idea and epidemic of the “fuckboy” in contemporary dating culture This series of digital collages also explores the role of body language in attracting potential lovers. A variety of self-portraits, inspired by David Hockney’s cinematic collages, detail and highlight body language through the artist’s interpretation of the male gaze. The initial elements of attraction—mannerism, style, gesture, appearance—are recreated, highlighting the difference between initial attraction and lasting connection. The Masks They Wear is a powerful exploration of lust versus love, and chemistry versus compatibility. It explores ways in which the “self” is digitally curated and presented, manipulated and misinterpreted, in a romantic landscape often stripped of context and connection. More Info below.
