Melo Gía Biography Melo Gía (Patricia Lewis Román) is a profesional singer and songwriter born and raised in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico on August 31st 1987. Melo Gía began her musical journey playing violin and singing in a children's choir for the Puerto Rico Music Conservatory from the age of 7 until she was 17. Even though she loved classical music, the contemporary music culture called to strongly, driving her to win a scholarship and study in the very prestigious music school, Berklee College of Music in Boston. It wasn't until she finished Berklee and moved back to Puerto Rico, that she picked up the guitar in 2010 and began practicing 6 hours a day. Her skills as a violinist gave her the ability to quickly pick up on the guitar and begin to compose. Daughter to Puerto Rican mother and African-American father from Philadelphia, Melo Gía has set off on a Journey of putting together a musical style that best describes who she is down to her latin and African-American Roots. "Bohemian Soul" is a fresh new sound painted in a canvas with all the colors of her Latin and African-American musical influences. A perfect mix of soul, jazz, reggae, bossa Nova and latin pop and bohemian balads. The list goes on and on. Without leaving aside the fact that “Melo Gía” has always been first and foremost a vocalist before she ever became a composer. Her clean, melodic voice, broad vocal register and the ability to translate emotion into song through heartfelt stories, leaves no doubt as to why people call her "Melo Gía" (Melody). After attending Berklee "Melo Gía" returned to Puerto Rico and continued her journey as a professional singer. From 2015-2017 she traveled the world singing for international Reggae band "Cultura Profética" (translated to Prophetic Culture) ; One of the biggest reggae bands in Latin America. Later on she was chosen to play "Ti Moune", the lead role in Puerto Ricos first Spanish adaptation of the Broadway play "Once On This Island". The play was meant to open for the general public at the University of Puerto Rico's historic theater. After six months of long and hard rehearsing, the play was canceled due to the United States Board of Fiscal Control decision to take away almost $500,000 from the University of Puerto Rico in order to pay back the enormous debt the island owed to United States creditors. The students went on strike and shut down the University, prohibiting any access to the campus and its theater. After this unfortunate event, "Melo Gía" began producing her first album. After a couple of months the project was unexpectedly stalled by the passing Hurrican María. “Melo Gía” was forced to move to the United States with her whole family and now is up to the task of starting over from scratch and building new musical relationships. She has continued to record her albumIn New york and now Los Angeles, something that has greatly enriched the sound of her vision. After pulling through a very tough year of mishaps due to Puerto Rico's various crisis, the vision for her musical project has now taken a new route. She is now determined to sing for a cause and create an album that could bring hope and inspiration for the people of Puerto Rico. She also aspires to spread consciousness by educating United States listeners on Puerto Rico's colonial status through her music. She hopes to shine a light at the struggles that come with being the oldest colony in the world. More Info below.
