The Laramie Project Presented By Lang Theater

The brutal 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student, led to a profound reckoning of American values. As Moises Kaufman, author of The Laramie Project, has written, "In its immediate aftermath, the nation launched into a dialogue that brought to the surface how we think and talk about homosexuality, sexual politics, education, class, violence, privileges and rights, and the difference between tolerance and acceptance." Four weeks after Shepard's murder, playwright Moises Kaufman and nine members of the Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie, Wyoming in order to contribute to that dialogue. Over the course of the following two years, they conducted over 200 interviews with residents of Laramie from which they created this award-winning documentary theater piece. Over twenty years since its premiere, The Laramie Project has been one of the most produced plays in America, seen by over 30 million people, and sparking reflection, discussion, compassion and action everywhere it is performed. Fifty years after Stonewall and ten years after the passage of the Hate Crime bill that bears Matthew Shepard's name, The Laramie Project continues to challenge and inspire performers and audiences.
