Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with a film for everyone in the family A talkback session will follow each movie Free and open to the publc Morning Children’s Film -9:30am – Hidden Figures – Rated PG - a 2016 biographical drama film directed by Theodore Melfi and written by Melfi and Allison Schroeder, which tells the incredible untold story of Katherine Jonson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) – brilliant African-American women working at NASA who served as the brains behind the launch into orbit of astronaut John Glenn, a stunning achievement that turned around the Space Race. This film brings awareness to the issues of racial and gender inequality in STEM and three STEM fields – technology, engineering and math – are celebrated in the movie. Afternoon Teen Film -1:00pm- Black Panther – Rated PG 13 – a 2018 Marvel superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is the first Marvel Studio movie to feature a predominantly black cast, drenched with African culture. "Black Panther" or T'Challa, played by Chadick Boseman, is the king and protector of a fictional technology and scientifically-advanced African nation, Wakanda. T'Challa's younger sister Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, is a tech-savvy innovator who develops modern technology in Wakanda, including designing her brother's superhero suits and gadgets. STEM is infused throughout this entire film and within all the themes that lie in ‘Black Panther’, one remains constant: Black women in technology. Shuri, T’Challa/Black Panther’s sister, spearheads the all the innovation in the Wakanda world. From creating Black Panther’s suit to defeating villains with virtual cars, Shuri is the only person that that can provide T’Challa the tools he needs to be the Black Panther superhero that he is. Evening Adult Film -4:00pm – Title VII – (For Adults only - Ages 18 and older) - a 2017 film by award-winning filmmaker Nicole Franklin. In this narrative feature, Title VII tells the story of Hillary Kelsey, a black woman and CEO of an IT consulting firm, who has no black employees until a mystery man turns her world upside down. The film tackles the issues of racism, gender and same-race discrimination, civil rights, and much more, in the workplace. More Info below.
