Leslie-Lohman Museum Free Admission Wednesday

Free Admission Wednesday at LeslieLohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art - see INFO below. GROUP FAIL PONY PLAY is an eco-utopic queer habitat that references such divergent sites as equine-assisted therapy, playgrounds, bathhouses, and sex parties through ceramics, quilting, rug tufting, performance video, and live programming. This site-specific multimedia installation in the Museums Living Room Gallery functions as both an earnest ameliorative refuge and a self-reflexive parody of queer utopic daydreams. The project unifies sculptural practices, improvisational comedy, and shameless amateurism to posit queerness as a conduit for community building, a gesture of spontaneous world-building, and a liminal space nurturing both laughter and self-care. ART AFTER STONEWALL, timed with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, is the first major exhibition to examine the impact of the LGBTQ civil-rights movement on the art world. Much has been written on the impact of the LGBTQ movement on American society and yet almost 50 years after Stonewall, key artists and their works of art are little known. This exhibition, which includes over 150 works of art and related materials, focuses on the work of openly LGBTQ artists like Nan Goldin, Holly Hughes, Robert Mapplethorpe, Tim Miller, Catherine Opie, and Andy Warhol, and considers as well the practices of such artists as Vito Acconci, Diane Arbus, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lynda Benglis and Karen Finley in terms of their engagement with a newly emerging queer subculture. Key themes surveyed through ART AFTER STONEWALL include Coming Out, Sexual Outlaws, The Uses of the Erotic, Gender and Body, Things are Queer, AIDS and Activism, and Were Here and this expansive exhibition will be on view at both the Leslie-Lohman Museum and at NYU Grey Art Gallery. Organizers of this exhibition include the Columbus Museum of Art in conjunction with the following curator Jonathan Weinberg, Ph.D., artist and independent art historian, Tyler Cann, Curator of Contemporary Art, and Drew Sawyer, Phillip Leonian and Edith Rosenbaum Leonian Curator, Photography, Brooklyn Museum of Art.
